Gordafarid: Guardian of the White Fortress
Gordafarid is a woman warrior in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh and the daughter of Gazhdaham. In the story of Rostam and Sohrab, when Sohrab attacks the White Fortress and captures its defender, Hojir, she puts on her armor, conceals her hair beneath her helmet, and rides out to fight. She bravely confronts Sohrab, and when his greater strength threatens to overwhelm her, she uses her wit to escape and return to the fortress.
Her character combines courage, intelligence, and a strong sense of responsibility. She steps forward in a moment of danger, showing that heroism depends on determination and resourcefulness as well as physical strength.
This painting offers an artistic interpretation of the epic heroine. Her resolute gaze, raised spear, and flowing red cloak, together with the movement of her horse and the fortress walls, evoke courage and steadfastness—a tribute to women’s place in Iran’s epic heritage.
